Introducing Gizmoojo Adgent -Plain text contextual advertising may not cut it anymore

If you have been running contextual advertising, such as google adsense, on your website, blogs, etc.. You might want to rethink about it. Especially with google adsense, you might not be getting what you are at least worth for a user click. If you have a high Effective CPM, As google defines it as:

“Cost per 1000 impressions. From a publisher’s perspective, CPM is a useful way to compare revenue across different channels and advertising programs. It is calculated by dividing total earnings by the number of impressions in thousands. For example, if a publisher earned $180 from 45,000 impressions, the CPM would equal $180/45, or $4.00.”

then I would say good for you, Plain text contentxual advertising does work for you, you do not have to read on because you are indeed getting what you deserve from your website, blog, etc. But if you are only getting say $0.01 eCPM and you have like 2000-3000 page views or impressions per day, well I say you deserve better! Why? Because in the yesteryears of online advertising, you can considered getting any money from running ads as a great achievement but not with today’s online advertising market. 2500impression * 0.01eCPM would give you say what ? $0.25/day. That is ridiculous! You deserve better a better advertising provider!

Content publishers need more choices and control to what type of Ads they should run. For one simple reason, just because your blog/content did not talked about Ipod does not mean your readers/visitors to your blog or site are not interested in Ipods. That is why Gizmoojo adgent has decided to give that power back to the content publisher. You manage your own Ads, you decide what product Ads you run on your blog/site.

So what is Gizmoojo Adgent? Gizmoojo adgent is an advertising widget that allows easy integration of interactive Ads into your blog or site and direct clicks to Amazon.com and thus allowing you to earn the comission payout from Amazon.com. Interactive is the key to driving product Ads, if you are advertising Ipods, how many version of Ipods are there? Gizmoojo Adgent widget allows you to include up to 5 different product ads. Interactivity is key, so being able to read about how good the product is drives the potential buyer to just proceed beyond the click. It increases the buy-it rate if the user clicks on the Ad and moves on to Amazon.com.

So base on 4% commission on a single ipod sale comission (0.04 * $275 = $12). That is $11 if only just 1 visitor to your blog or site clicks on the Ad and bought the Ipod. That’s 44 days of google adsense revenue if you are getting $0.25/day for CPM ads.

Since wordpress.com does not allow embedding of iframe html elements, head on out to http://adgent.blogspot.com for the live demo!

Digg goes down and so what the rest of the world do…

July 21, 2006 at 6:59 pm | In Web 2.0, digg down | 1 Comment

Fired up my firefox this morning and wow… Digg is down… for maintenance… (“some changes”) to be specifics…but this is rare for me, because this is the first time that I saw this “We are down” page.

diggdown

But its cool that they have a list of sites for the lost diggers to visit while they are doing their thing… But its funny that they did not have a link to their founder, Kevin Rose’s blog…. .. Corrections there… they did have a link to diggblog.
Digg will be down for a brief period, while we make some changes. While not digging, the digg crew recommends:

Wonder why they had to “make some changes” all the sudden…. so I headed out to the Diggblog and sure enough there is some details there. Apparently, Owen did some updates last nite and it ended up breaking Digg… in a bad way.. Nahhhhh…. nothing there.. that was from 02/2006…. sorry for the confusion there..

Gizmoojo.com Beta 0.5 released

July 19, 2006 at 6:33 pm | In Startups, Web 2.0, beta test, gizmoojo, startup, web2.0 | Leave a Comment

With all the server issues behind my back, I decided to spice up Gizmoojo.com with a little small update. If anyone is curious why we had this release as 0.5, its because this is ver0.5 of Gizmoojo software. You see, I have tagging my development code with release version so that I can easily know what version of code is where and what is fix and what is added to the version of software Gizmoojo runs on, and when we had our first public beta, it was release 0.3. So I thought, why not include the release version on the mainpage and shortly also a link to the release notes (software engineering stuff – basically a table of what is fix, new features, etc)

With this release, I’ve changed the site mainpage a little to just always show the Portable Audio Players + a random selected department. Bare in mind this is no way how the mainpage will be, I’m sure it will be evolving as we move along and feedbacks from users. So get out there and write your very own Gizmoojo page now.

Things are settling down now. Dust are all over from the battle Dreamhost had with their servers yesterday and I feel better now. And for all I care, my blog took a nice bump … a really huge bump in traffic and visitors. Nice….

Dreamhost crumbles. Is this the end?

July 18, 2006 at 5:58 am | In dreamhost, gizmoojo, server issues | 6 Comments

Now asI am writing this, Dreamhost , one of the fasting glowing hosting company (also currently my webhost) is having really bad server troubles. It all begun 3 days ago when I woke up to Gizmoojo.com having the dreadful RAILS APPLICATION ERROR. It appears their trouble started with one of their file server screeching to an deadbeat. So their tech support having been working nonstop over the weekend, and even slept in the server room, to get the server back to life again.

So as you know, since my server is down, I decided to exercise my GIMP skills a little and conjured up this great Dreamhost Ads

dreamhost

But it appears Dreamhost is having a really bad network failure within their own networks. www.dreamhost.com is down and so are the wikis and the control panel for users. This sounds really bad… Early they had advised their customers to backup their data… but isn’t that their job to? but don’t they back up these server?

Here is what on dreamhoststatus.com now…. I think they will be getting tons of emails from their customers real soon.. althought mine have been ignored once today already.. usually they do reply back in a timely manner….

The problems are worse..

July 17, 2006 at 5:03 pm PST by Josh

It seems like the problems are more widespread with our network than just our internal stuff.

We’re actively working on it, and apologize for any possible downtime this may be causing customer services.

We will update here as soon as we know more!

Panel and Wiki down..

July 17, 2006 at 3:42 pm PST by Josh

We’re having some problems right now with our firewall for public websites we have that connect to our private internal databases.. we hope to get it fixed soon, but in the meantime, https://panel.dreamhost.com/ and http://wiki.dreamhost.com/ (and http://mailboxes.anydomainwehost.com/) are down.

We’re doing our best to get it all better ASAP!

Dreamhost, Your support needs to wake up.

July 18, 2006 at 2:12 am | In dreamhost, gizmoojo, server issues | 7 Comments

This is not my first time that I have been having problems with Dreamhost. But this time its consider the worst of it all. Its almost 3 days now since they declared on the Dreamhost Status blog that they are having trouble with one of the file servers. Ok I can understand that, hardware do fail and I have no problem with that. But what I don’t understand about their customer support is that although the file server issue is sort of, kind of resolved but its really not. The hostmachine is going really really really slow slow slow and what I mean by that is its really slow. Logging into the machine thru SSH and then do a “ls”, the directory listings would come back after 20-30 secs.

So meanwhile since I cannot do anything with the shared server that I have paid for, one year in full, I let my creative GIMP skills let lose. What are nice marketing campaign this would be for Dreamhost, the support team that are sometimes deep in their dream from their Party All Night Long. Thank you Dreamhost! I had fun making this. 8^)

Update… Ok Dreamhost.. I feel better now after laughing and rolling on the floor staring at this great masterpiece for some time……

Network fileserver troubles

July 15, 2006 at 2:09 am PST by mikeh

One of our fileservers is having some serious problems, and is causing several of our shared hosting servers to become unresponsive. We’re working to swap out the filer now and get everything back online.

Watch this space for updates.

We think we have the problem narrowed down now and fixed. The fileserver has been running a consistency check on the volume for about the last hour now, and should be done in about 30 more minutes. Once this is done we can get service restored!

It looks like the file system check wasn’t as finished as I thought it was. It will be several more hours until it finishes. We’re very sorry about the downtime, we are working as fast as we can.

Midwest valley

July 14, 2006 at 7:30 pm | In Startups, gizmoojo, midwest valley | 1 Comment

Since I talked about the recent “heat” going on in the Midwest, Ookles, once talked about as a Flickr killer, looks closer to launching soon. Web2.0Central has exclusive leaked Screenshots of Ookles and from the screenshots, Ookles definitely looked interesting, so I will be keeping an eye on their launch. Since I am thinking about photosites, Zooomr, looks like they could possibly be going into the acquisition stage. By the way, Zooomr is launching their ver2.0 today. So that is another to look out for.

Well.. sorry for going off track, back to the topic…  Midwest Heat. The reason that I talked about Ookles is because Ookles is founded and located in the Midwest too, Indianapolis, Indiana to be more precise. So with 37signals starting the heat down at Chicago.. Ookles adding more coal down Indy, and soon Google out at Ann Arbor, its surely getting hotter here in the Midwest.

Welcome to the Midwest, Google!

July 11, 2006 at 6:02 pm | In Startups, google | Leave a Comment

Yes, this is being reported and digged right now. “Google coming to Ann Arbor“. I guess the big west finally figured it out. There’s something going on in the Midwest other than farming. Now that Google becomes the first big internet software giant to have a foothold here in the Midwest, hmmm.. guess who else would follow…

If you think about it, the Midwest might be poised to be the next valley, why? As startups find themselves having to pay out of their nose for engineers on the West coast, it is imperative for startups to locate out of the heat zone such as Silicon Valley. Of course, the cool thing to do now for startups is to have developers working off their laptops on their beaches across the pacific oceans running skype thru a broadband connection. But If Ann Arbor plays it right, they could possibly position themselves as the spot to be for Internet startups. I mean backed by a highly rated university, U.Mich, I sure they have no shortage of Brains in the area. They just have to fight to keep it there.

Now, if I was working for Google, I would get myself out to the Ann Arbor site, and why? You might be thinking… Hell No.. I hate snow, but if you think about it, trade great weather for the beauty of four seasons, and YES, the chance to own a house! Housing cost are much higher out on the west coast, you will never be able to own one unless you had one.. Get it…. Things have been heating up abit here in the Midwest for sure.. and we might have M$ getting into the action here too pretty soon…
